Liberty - It’s 1828 and the citizens of Paris still mourn in the wake of their failed revolution. Among them, in the dark alleys and crumbling cathedrals of the city, the most wretched have gathered into guilds of thieves, assassins – and worse. Together they are known as The Court of Miracles.

Family - Eponine has lost more than most. When her father, Thénardier, sells her sister to the Guild of Flesh she makes a promise to do anything she can to get her sister back, even if that means joining the Court of Miracles, the very people keeping her sister a slave.

Treachery - Eponine becomes perhaps the greatest thief the Court has ever known, finding a place among them and gaining another sister, Cosette. But she has never forgotten the promise she made, and if she’s to have any hope of saving one sister, she will have to betray the other.

This beautiful reimagining of Les Misérables tells the stories of your favourite characters and what might have happened if the French Revolution had not come to pass.

Almost 40 years have passed since the failure of the French Revolution, in this alternate history/fantasy reimagining of Les Misérables.

Conditions for the common people have not improved, and almost the only way to survive on the streets of Paris is to join a Guild and become a subject of the Miracle Court. There are nine such Guilds, with each focusing on a particular criminal activity. The leader of each Guild is called a lord or lady, and together they rule the underground. Harsh penalties apply to any who break their laws.

The story is narrated by Eponine (Nina) Thénardier. After her beloved sister is sold to the Flesher’s Guild, ruled by the ruthless Tiger, she determines to save her, no matter what the cost. When beautiful, naïve, Cosette (Ettie), also comes to Tiger’s attention, Nina will do anything to keep her safe.

Her love for her adopted sister gives her the courage to face many dangers—from the dark city streets to the courts of the Queen—and ultimately force her to choose between starting a war or losing those she loves forever.

A fabulous, colourful fantasy tale with the gritty taste of 19th century France.

Favourite quote: ‘Sometimes we must pay a terrible price to protect the things we love.’

    Content Notes

    1. Infrequent non-graphic violence. 2. The nobility conspires to poison the commoners through the water supply, in order to reduce their numbers and thereby reduce the risk of another revolution. As retribution, they are manipulated into poisoning their own children. 3. The Flesher’s Guild controls prostitution (although this is only inferred, never clearly defined) and keeps the girls drugged and compliant. The other Guilds didn’t ever want to be involved in such activities, and Nina is ultimately responsible for freeing the girls and crushing Tiger once and for all.
