Grace and her mother have moved from Broome to a real-life castle, steeped in literary history, and Grace has discovered that she can slip back in time to previous incarnations of the castle. But this time, when Grace travels back in time, she has to help find two sisters who were supposed to be staying at the castle and have been kidnapped along the way.

During her travels, she has the good fortune to meet Beatrix Potter, J.M. Barrie and May Gibbs. It seems the castle has been home to a good many adventures over the years! Now Grace just has to figure out how she and her family fit into the castle’s storied past.

Moving from Broome (WA)  to a castle in the highlands of Scotland would be an adventure for any 12-year-old, but for Grace it’s just the beginning. The discovery of a magical map, which reveals portals to the past hidden around the castle, is what changes her life.

With the help of her best friend Ellie, Grace bounces between the exciting events of the present-day castle and neighbouring village and solving century-old mysteries. Travelling to 1890, the girls help to solve an abduction and string of thefts alongside literary heavyweights Beatrix Potter, May Gibbs and a teenaged JM Barrie.

There’s a wonderfully whimsical yet earnest feel to this very enjoyable timeslip adventure. Grace and Ellie’s desire to do the right thing in the present is mirrored by their intent to right the wrongs of the past. Their determination to catch the perpetrators is infectious.

The inclusion of literary figures adds a nice touch and helps to ground the story in historical fact. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

    Content Notes

A magical map determines their time travel (92). The girls see a fortune teller at the fairground to pass the time. The fortune teller looks into a crystal ball, says a few vague things, and tells them that she cannot predict their futures. Ellie says that “it’s all nonsense” (p. 78-80).
