Joe is used to rural life. He loves sitting under the tree his grandfather planted decades ago, watching the world pass by. His favourite thing of all is the starry night sky. When his family moves to the city, the light pollution means he can’t see the stars, and the tree in the courtyard below his window is stunted and sad.
Joe is so preoccupied by the differences between his old and new homes that he can’t reach out to the other children in the building. But one night he has the idea to make stars of his own: he strings them up in the tree in the courtyard and hangs up his wind chimes. The other children are overjoyed and soon join in with decorating and making the building their own.
This is a sweet and beautifully illustrated book. Joe’s feelings of homesickness will be relatable to many readers, and his strategy for overcoming them is great advice. Creating, and sharing your creations with others, is one of the best ways to heal a broken heart and build new relationships.
