    Review

Asiya is a young girl who loves going to her grandmother Nanu’s house. It’s filled with all sort of treasures, especially in Nanu’s katha chest. Kathas are light quilts made out of old saris. Inside the chest are quilts that Nanu made herself. Asiya likes to crawl inside the chest and burrow into the fabric.

Asiya imagines that the different quilts whisper stories to her about the different members of her family. A katha with gold threads reminds her of war hero Boro Khala; a massive patchwork katha reminds her of her home. Sometimes, Asiya’s mother wraps her in a light blue and soft purple katha. This is Nanu’s quilt, which smells of tea and old books and is the oldest of them all.

A wonderful depiction of South Asian culture and pride and appreciation for one’s family. As Asiya finds a new quilt, the book displays a two-page-spread of that particular family member’s life. These spreads use four images from important moments in their life to tell their story.

Each set of images has a unique border, echoing a quilt. A beautiful art style with warm hues and rich textures creating a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Asiya’s love for the kathas is an expression of the love she feels for her family.
