Worse Things is a story about connections, the ways they are made, and what happens when they are lost or illusive, from the award-winning author of Pearl Verses the World and Toppling.

Worse Things follows the lives of three main characters: Blake, an Aussie Rules football player who suffers a devastating injury; Jolene, a hockey player who hates the game and is grieving over the recent death of her father; and Amed, a soccer-loving, non-English speaking orphan who feels like an outsider since arriving in Australia after being raised in a refugee camp.

A touching and inspirational story about connections and the things that bind us all.

    Review

This superbly crafted verse novel evocatively portrays the experiences of the three protagonists, both at school and at home.

Blake, a keen AFL player, has broken his arm and will miss the season. Jolene, a gifted hockey player, has no love for the sport and only plays to appease her demanding mother. Amed, a recently arrived orphan and refugee, speaks little English.

Although the three are classmates, their worlds don't meet, until change eventually brings them all together. Blake's injury excludes him from the team and gradually his friends and teammates start to forget him, leading to some moments of reflection and realisation. Jolene's world is shaken when her father is killed, which brings her closer to her mother, strengthening their friendship. Amed is just there, seeing it all, an outsider who doesn't have the words. However, his presence may just be what is needed ...

A powerful story about connections, friendship, and what's important. Highly recommended.
