Gracie is very excited to be going to the Sunshine Stables Pony Camp—it’s her chance to prove to her parents that she is responsible enough to have a pet!

Unfortunately, Gracie is having some trouble with her pony—Bobby is being very grumpy, and Gracie can’t seem to connect with him the way all the other girls have with their ponies. No matter what she tries, Gracie simply can’t get Bobby to warm up to her, and apparently he is being extra grumpy this week…could it be all Gracie’s fault?

When Ellie, another girl who has ridden Bobby, joins the camp, Gracie is even more worried; Ellie doesn’t seem to have as much trouble with Bobby as she does…maybe he does hate her! Things seem to be getting better for a while, but when Bobby gets spooked during a lesson, Lainey, the camp leader, decides that it might just be best to swap Gracie to a new pony. Gracie is devastated—when her parents find out that she had to swap ponies, they’ll for sure think she isn’t responsible enough for a pet cat!

Just as Gracie is about to give up hope of ever making things work with Bobby, she notices that Bobby seems to be trying to tell her something. She follows her instincts, and Bobby’s clues, and realises that there IS a reason Bobby is extra grumpy—and it isn’t her fault after all! In fact, Bobby hasn’t been getting enough sleep because there’s a litter of baby kittens in the loft above his stable…and one baby kitten is trapped in the wall!

Thankfully, the kittens are rescued, and when her parents learn how brave and responsible she has been, Gracie is given what she most wanted all along: her very own pet cat (the mother of the baby kittens, in fact!). Overjoyed, Gracie happily spends the rest of Pony camp with Bobby, who is much happier and more playful now that his kitten roommates have moved out.

This is a very sweet story about responsibility and not giving up. Gracie’s determination to persevere even when things don’t seem to be working out with Bobby is very admirable, and her kindness and bravery are two wonderful traits. This lovely early reader also includes some wonderful information about ponies, woven into themes of responsibility and being yourself.
