    Review

Willa has a little family that’s just right for her: a mother, a father, and a bird living in one house.

But when her parents separate, pieces of family keep getting added at a rate Willa doesn’t expect, and she feels like she never has anyone to herself.

Her father meets a man called Kevin, and they have a daughter together, Hooper: Willa’s new little sister. But Dad and Kevin break up, and each find new partners in Bruno and Pete, who both have pets. And even though Willa thought she at least had Mum to herself, Mum meets someone new too: Pietro, who has two children.

Willa is overwhelmed and asks her mum “Aren’t I enough”? In response, her mother asks if Willa can make room in her heart for all these people who love her. By the time that Willa finds out that Mum is pregnant, she’s decided that she does have room for more love.

Warm pencil illustrations bring Willa’s cozy homes and her family’s antics to life.

This book will help children understand non-traditional family structures, as it shows each step on the path of Willa’s complex familial structure, including divorce, defacto relationship break-ups and the formation of new relationships (traditional and same-sex), step-siblings and half-siblings.

Throughout, Willa draws her expanding family as vibrant, childlike stick-figures—one mum, four dads, three homes, three siblings, and three pets—a visual aide to help readers to keep track.
